Concept Testing
Concept testing is a user research method used to evaluate an idea, design direction, or product concept with target users before significant development resources are invested. It validates whether a concept resonates with users and meets a real need.
Researchers present participants with a concept described in text, shown as a sketch, mockup, or early prototype, and gather structured feedback. Questions typically explore whether users understand the concept, whether it solves a problem they actually have, how it compares to what they currently use, and whether they would consider using it.
Concept testing is most effective in the early stages of the product development lifecycle, before teams have committed to a specific design direction. It reduces the risk of building something that looks polished but fails to address a genuine user need.
It can be conducted through moderated interviews (allowing deep probing), unmoderated surveys (for speed and scale), or AI-moderated sessions (combining depth with scalability). The choice depends on the fidelity of the concept and the depth of insight required.
