Guided User Testing
Guided user testing is a moderated form of usability research in which a facilitator, either a human or AI, actively guides participants through tasks, asks questions, and probes for deeper insight during the session. It contrasts with unmoderated testing, where participants complete tasks independently without real-time facilitation.
The facilitator introduces the session, explains the tasks, and observes as participants interact with the product. When participants hesitate, skip a step, or complete a task unexpectedly, the facilitator asks follow-up questions, "What were you expecting to happen?" or "What made you choose that option?" to surface the reasoning behind the behavior.
Guided testing produces richer qualitative data than unmoderated testing because the facilitator can pursue unexpected moments and adapt the session in real time. It is particularly valuable for testing complex workflows, understanding nuanced user needs, and exploring unfamiliar user segments.
