Heatmaps

A heatmap is a visual representation of user interaction data on a webpage or app screen, using color gradients to show where users click, move their cursor, tap, or scroll most and least frequently. Areas of high activity appear in warm colors (red, orange); areas of low activity appear in cool colors (blue, green).

Heatmap tools record mouse movements, clicks, and scroll depth across many user sessions and aggregate them into a single overlay on the page. This makes patterns immediately visible, revealing which elements attract attention, which are ignored, and how far down the page most users scroll.

Common heatmap types include click maps (where users click or tap), move maps (where the cursor hovers), and scroll maps (how far down the page users scroll). Each type answers different design questions.
