Live Moderated Testing
Live moderated testing is a form of user research in which a facilitator, human or AI, conducts a research session with a participant in real time, observing their behavior, asking questions, and adapting the session based on what they observe. It is the most interactive and flexible form of usability research.
The moderator and participant interact synchronously either in person or via a video call. The participant is given tasks and asked to think aloud as they work. The moderator listens, observes, and probes: following up on hesitations, asking about unexpected choices, and exploring areas that emerge naturally during the session.
Live moderated testing produces the richest qualitative data of any research method because the moderator can pursue unexpected moments, clarify ambiguous responses, and adapt the session flow in real time.
